- Square2I've not tinkered with AI yet. Would it ace upgrading a project from Spring 5.x to SpringBoot 3.5?
- Square2I mean agentic coding AI
- ParaDunno how much of an acing it would be, but it can do Spring Boot quite well.
- ParaSo...possibly yes, just needs reviewing.
- ParaAnd I'm just generally throwing out "it". There's so much Spring code out there that all models definitely can do their darnest.
- Square2hmm. Too bad I don't have access to an agent yet =(
- dreamrealSpring 5 to Spring Boot is doable but I'd progress Spring -> Spring Boot matching your spring version, THEN upgrade Spring Boot release by release
- dreamrealSquare2: free agents can do it, too, just slowly and in small chunks. Also see OpenRewrite.
- Square2dreamreal, gotcha. Yeah, I've used OpenRewrite with some luck. I was fearing it would require me to run every migration from 2018(?) to now to get it where I want it to be.
- cheesereven if it did, that'd be less work than manually doing it yourself.
- dreamrealSquare2: well, considering that that's the actual path I just recommended...
- dreamrealYou can do it more directly. but you're better off doing it incrementally
- ParaIf I were to do that kind of effort, I'd probably do some refactoring first as well.
- dreamrealIt's probably not esp necessary in and of itself
- ParaAgentic even, tell it to unify patterns and annotation uses in controllers and that sort of stuff.
- dreamrealif the app was designed around spring in the first place, it's really infrastructure changes that you'd want to step through
- ParaI've had my fair self induced problems of misunderstanding how part of the framework is meant to be used and later on finding out that I was dum and 90% of the stuff is redundant :)
- ParaAgent mode with "ask if unclear" in prompts is a pretty good combination as well.
- Para(when it works, sometimes...stuff breaks)
- Square2I test my luck with OpenRewrite. Finding the oldest migration I can find to begin with =D
- dreamrealGood luck. And I wouldn't expect it to be zero-effort on your part. It might be light effort, but you SHOULD expect to have to be involved.
- Square2I've done numerous of these spring upgrades past 10 years so trust me, I know.
- ParaSo you're a re-Springer.
- Square2It's boring work, but it's pretty chill.
- Square2Could take a week to upgrade a large project. I fear you can't motivate that cost any more with AI around.
- dreamrealI dunno, depends on strategy and approach and scope, I guess
- dreamrealNot having insight into the project I wouldn't be able to estimate either way
