  1. deebofor some reason broker reminded me of kingston wall, but on maybe on too much ambien or something :)
  2. dreamrealhttps://bytecode.news/posts/2026/10/where-is-all-the-new-good-software (also has audio!)
  3. javabotdreamreal's title: "Nate Meyvis: Where is all the new, good software? | ByteCode.News"
  4. [twisti]think what you will about lombok, but vscode defaulting to 'default plugin version of lombok if plugin version and project version differs' is the dumbest decision ever. when would anyone EVER want a default to overwrite a specifically set version ?
  5. dreamrealMaybe it's to make sure vscode actually supports lombok accurately - like if lombok changes, the vscode support might break, and this protects against that? I dunno, I don't use lombok or vscode :/
  6. [twisti]and of course they bundle the plugin with an unreleased indev version, which they then default to. entirely sensible
  7. deebousing vscode for java seems like a weird situation
  8. ParaIt's the active refusal of accepting that old folks now better.
  9. ParaBut I digress; I don't really care that much, if it works for you, then you do you.
  10. ParaAlthough for this particular situation, it's Lombok...I wish it was friendlier across the board.
  11. ParaIn IDE news, JetBrains is merging Air with IDEA in 2026.3 release.
  12. ParaI can't really even say what Air specifically is (agent chat-harness-management-thingy) so maybe it's a good thing.
  13. ParaBehold, the Thing: https://blog.jetbrains.com/blog/2026/09/22/introducing-jetbrains-air/

  16. comradvscode works pretty fine for java
  17. llanhmockPara: they make a somewhat dark and scary claim about the software development system era being contained in one window is ending. like, containment is no longer an option? and most sdlc workflows are already reaching out past the IDE. we have terminal windows, browser windows, and remote devices.
  18. llanhmockheh, then they say "verifying work inside the JetBrains IDEs". so..we are back to a single window again?
  19. * llanhmock maybe I'm missing something
  20. llanhmockanyway, thanks for sharing, Para. It's right up my alley and directly in realm of my daily work$.
  21. Parallanhmock: I guess on some very high level IDEs should be seen as workspace window managers with deep integration between each window.
  22. ParaIf you start from there, you can paint any truth you want.
  23. mrfbHey! I’m working on this Kubernetes Java client PR to make a test deterministic. Increasing the OffsetDateTime still produces identical timestamps on Windows with JDK 17/21, while JDK 11 passes (along all linux and osx builds), trying to understand platform difference here instead of just add more milliseconds PR: https://github.com/kubernetes-client/java/pull/4927
  24. javabotmrfb's title: "fix(tests): Make EventCorrelatorTest timestamps deterministic by flrnd · Pull Request #4927 · kubernetes-client/java · GitHub"
  25. nevetfix(tests): Make EventCorrelatorTest timestamps deterministic by flrnd · Pull Request #4927 · kubernetes-client/java
  26. julemand101mrfb: Looking in the code this look sus: `Optional<MutablePair<CoreV1Event, V1Patch>> result = correlator.correlate(newEvent);`. If you go inside that method you see it create new timestamp for the event: https://github.com/kubernetes-client/java/blob/7efbaec406e7e75b60943e5797b6e5134187d4a5/extended/src/main/java/io/kubernetes/client/extended/event/legacy/EventAggregator.java#L53
  27. javabotjulemand101's title: "java/extended/src/main/java/io/kubernetes/client/extended/event/legacy/EventAggregator.java at 7efbaec406e7e75b60943e5797b6e5134187d4a5 · kubernetes-client/java · GitHub"
  28. julemand101So the code basically ends up creating two new timestamps so close together that you have the time resolution issue on Windows
  29. Tenchii got a covid vaccine this past weekend and usually get a fever and aches for a day as a side effect but this latest one took me out for 3 days. i didn't spend any time with computer or devices, but watched movies. and i actually watched the indiana jones and the dial of destiny movie
  30. ParaJavem
  31. Tenchifirst indiana jones movie that i REALLY liked since raideers of the lost ark :)
  32. ParaHaven't coded on Windows in ages, but back when I did, Windows millisecond resolution was actually kinda terrible due to how Windows exposes millisecond clock to applications, and due to backwards compatability JDK used the inaccurate method for System#currentTimeMillis while #nanoSeconds was made to use the multicore compatible updated version.
  33. ParaBasically on systems with more than one CPU threads it wasn't guaranteed to increment monotonically, and something stupid happened along the line and somehow the actual step ended up being like 16ms...
  34. Para(yes, this is very old, might be completely irrelevant now, take it as a good night story)
  35. julemand101mrfb: In other words, it seems to completely ignore the `now` you create with `now = now.plusNanos(10);` as the method create it's own `now`
  36. * dreamreal looks at Tenchi
  37. * Chronos looks at dreamreal looking at Tenchi
  38. Tenchidreamreal: just filling in for our absent chatbots until yandex gets things back online
  39. * Para 's strabismic eyes wander all around
  40. ChronosOh nice, new bytecode.news articles :)
  41. ParaTenchi: Ah, so you're making yourself the 5G tower to improve the signal. Or something.
  42. GreenResponseespecially with anti-vaccine propaganda
  43. dreamrealChronos: there's audio now!
  44. dreamrealChronos: I've been going through a lot of little things on BCN
  45. TenchiPara: nah, just providing offtopic chatter that's slightly related to whatever anybody is talking about... the mention of time handling made me think of the movie
  46. ParaI don't remember if I've seen that one.
  47. Tenchiit's the newest
  48. ParaI know I've seen Crystal Skull. I can't remember either.
  49. Para+that
  50. dreamreali started it but the spielberg opening action scene is taking FOREVER
  51. dreamrealSo I decided to finish Star Track: Strange New Worlds To Conquer instead
  52. ParaMy current mode of mindbending is coming from playing Control Resonant. It's more of a reality bending than time bending kind, though.
  53. julemand101mrfb: Since you did not answer and I need to leave, I have added a comment on the PR: https://github.com/kubernetes-client/java/pull/4927#pullrequestreview-5523536533

  56. dreamrealjulemand101: ++
  57. nevetjulemand101 now has karma of 1.
  58. Parajavabot: *snark*
  59. javabotPara, what does that even *mean*?
  60. Chronosdreamreal: I really like the new audio feature
  61. dreamrealThank you. I think it's... okay. I find I absolutely hate doing it, but if it works for users...
  62. mrfbjulemand101: I saw your comment on github, sorry, I was taking a look and preparing a reply, makes sense, I overlooked that
  63. dreamrealjulemand101: ++
  64. nevetjulemand101 now has karma of 2.
  65. mrfbjulemand101: thank you!
  66. Chronosdreamreal: Do you hate doing it just because you hate the process of speaking and recording?
  67. dreamrealChronos: yes. I'm not a strong speaker, don't enjoy it, don't care for my own voice, it feels very "oh look at me"
  68. dreamrealOTOH the discipline of doing the audio actually helps the text quite a bit
  69. dreamrealThe terence eden post, I realized that I had some things out of order: in print it works, when speaking it doesn't
  70. Chronosdreamreal: Hmmm. My older (and fading...) ears are able to understand you very well, which is nice. Have you considered a text-to-speech automated conversion?
  71. dreamrealChronos: yes, and no effin' way.
  72. ParaLike Harrison said to Lucas at one point, "You can write this shit but you sure can't say it".
  73. Chronosdreamreal: Why not? Honest question, and no judgment implied.
  74. Tenchii still have to get back to the orignal control game... i started it and realized there was actually a story behind it and i'd have to pay attention... and this requires more time haha
  75. Para-> reading text out loud definitely helps spotting its weaknesses (Luca's dialogue has always been crap, that's what the original quote was about)
  76. dreamrealChronos: this last post I actually WANTED to quote fable in the post but fable didn't give me a short block to use - it gave me like eight paragraphs. I was gonna use a vocoder on that section, though :D
  77. Tenchisame with the plague tale games
  78. ParaTenchi: Well, definitely take the time. If you've played other Remedy games, you'll have a very long experience ahead of you.
  79. ParaTenchi: Although partly backfit, all Remedy games are storywise related to each other. Just not in an Marvel's Avengers way.
  80. dreamrealChronos: It's too easy for people to accuse BCN of automated text already, so having an automated voice just leans into that. Plus, this helps me justify a few $k of audio equipment in my office... plus it helps me connect with the content better. It'd be EASIER to automate but it'd sound automated.
  81. Tenchihah, i played the original alan wake game until i got to the first difficult part and then got pissed and quit
  82. ParaThere's a lore video online about just Alan Wake 2 which is like 7 hours long.
  83. dreamrealChronos: incidentally, you're still at the top of nevet's leaderboard for karma :D
  84. Chronosdreamreal: All of that makes complete sense.
  85. Chronosdreamreal: Heh! Oh dear... that is undeserved!
  86. dreamrealNot enough people use karma any more :D
  87. * Chronos recently-ish trimmed his IRC and Discord channels way, way, way, WAY down, as he couldn't "keep up"
  88. Chronos(And I'm still in too many)
  89. ParaThat's because the bot comes and goes and doesn't listen at random times like an angsty teenager.
  90. dreamrealnevet is always here. :D
  91. dreamrealI just have it muted in #java because having it compete with javabot on automated triggers like karma would be noisy and unfortunate, and the goal was never to compete with javabot
  92. dreamreal... just do what javabot does and more, way gooder
  93. Chronosdreamreal: In my opinion, you have a "radio voice," which is a compliment -- highly understandable. Just so you know. Just one Internet stranger's opinion.
  94. dreamrealChronos: in MY opinion, I have a face MADE for radio, and a voice made for print.
  95. ChronosHeh!
  96. dreamrealI listen to myself and hear my speech impediment front and center
  97. GreenResponse(thrilling voice) this summer!
  98. Chronosdreamreal: Eww, what? Speech impediment? I don't hear it.
  99. ChronosGreenResponse: haha :)
  100. Chronoss/Eww/Err/
  101. dreamrealChronos: for those who know what they're looking for, it's pretty clear
  102. dreamrealmy plosives aren't, my sibilants are really dicey, my lung capacity sucks, and the resonance of my voice is really lousy
  103. dreamrealfor example, I can't say the word "plosive" properly because it... starts with a plosive
  104. dreamrealand part of the reason I speak slowly on the audio is because I simply cannot speak quickly
  105. Chronosdreamreal: Huh, interesting.
  106. NeXeNplosive?
  107. NeXeNnacy pelosi?
  108. NeXeNs/nacy/nancy/
  109. dreamrealNeXeN: plosives are letters that use explosive force, like 'p', 't', 'd'
  110. dreamrealand b, for example
  111. NeXeNya i was just joshing
  112. NeXeNwhat you up to?
  113. dreamrealyou build up pressure in your mouth and then release it, creating the sound, and I do not do that well
  114. dreamrealI'm mostly annoying myself by wanting to post something on BCN that actually violates the content policy I set for myself
  115. cheeseryou do that, you'll have to fire yourself.
  116. dreamrealI doubt it, but even so, standards are good
  117. dreamrealsomeone posted an advisory about cancer and an approach to treatment, and it's hard not to put that on BCN as a PSA
  118. dreamrealkilled both of my parents, I have a niece with cancer as well, and a number of friends who've endured cancer, some of whom survived, so it's kinda near and dear to my heart as a topic
  119. cheeserrebrand for a hot minute as Blood, Cancer News.
  120. dreamrealhmm, hmm, hmm
  121. cheeserit's spooky season after all
  122. dreamrealI already have spooky masthead animations :D
  123. cheesergo forth and PSA!
  124. dreamrealI've been trying to figure out a way to put the masthead animations on the posts themselves but there's not really room
  125. cheeserseriously, the only people who would complain are people whose opinions aren't worth hearing.
  126. dreamrealYeah, I know
  127. dreamrealI just wouldn't be able to add anything to it, it'd just be a repost, and there's probably more value from other means
