  1. cheeser~wb
  2. javabotThank you, cheeser.
  3. dreamrealooo any changes?
  4. dreamrealI'm fixing search in nevet now :D
  5. dreamrealdamn stemming was unexpected
  6. dreamreal(I was passing through sanitized queries to postgres, and it stemmed when it should have but when I wasn't expecting it)
  7. cheesernah. just VPS maintenance requiring a reboot.
  8. cheeseri have a shit ton of changes on a branch that I need to merge. it's mostly UI/quarkus related but various lib upgrades here and there.
  9. dreamreal*nod* Are you still on the same VPS provider?
  10. cheeseronce i'm done with this morphia work, i'm going to go over the bot with claude and get some drastic clean up done. too many experiments, some unfinished, still lingering.
  11. cheeseryeah. same one.
  12. dreamreal*nod* I moved to a new provider and I'm on a dedicated server - the VPS we were using (I was on the same service javabot's on) overallocates like MAD, although that might depend on region
  13. dreamreallike, I was seeing 27 minute build times drop to 28s on the dedicated server: I expected SOME of that but not that much
  14. dreamreala 60x loss of performance is ... pretty severe, IMO
  15. dreamrealIt also cleared up a shedload of *mysql* errors - like, mysql was struggling on the server even though it had *resource* headroom, thanks to overallocation.
  16. dreamrealVery inexpensive service and worth every penny. :/
  17. cheeserwell, it *is* mysql...
  18. dreamrealWell, mysql should be able to handle five wordpress instances on relatively low-traffic sites.
  19. dreamrealThe overallocation was just too much, and I couldn't use it to build at all, even runtime... like, the early versions of nevet took five or six minutes to start
  20. dreamrealThat probably helped prevent litharge from wantiung to ban it due to join spam, but...
  21. dreamrealsorry, nevet was getting some inferred property updates
  22. ChronosThe lobste.rs website recently moved to SQLite and was able to cut their VPS requirements in more than half.
  23. dreamrealWhat the heck were they using before
  24. dreamrealand for WHAT
  25. ChronosI think it was either MariaDB or PostgreSQL, but I forget the details.
  26. dreamrealAnd they ... what
  27. dreamrealthat's crazy. What are they running the site on? That sounds like really bad design or really bad provisioning
  28. Chronoshttps://lobste.rs/s/oz7ebk/lobste_rs_migrates_from_mariadb_sqlite
  29. nevetlobste.rs migrates from MariaDB to SQLite
  30. javabotChronos's title: "lobste.rs migrates from MariaDB to SQLite | Lobsters"
  31. ChronosOops, that article is outdated. They had to revert after their first attempt, but later, they did successfully make the move. They have articles discussing all the details, including their VPS requirements.
  32. * dreamreal boggles
  33. dreamrealthis mostly makes me think whoever designed lobste.rs may have done a good thing in design but their awareness of actual architecture done got broke
  34. ChronosWell, the website uses Ruby, so I'd guess that hurts pretty bad, performance-wise, heh.
  35. dreamrealmy point stands
  36. Chronosdreamreal: My _guess_ is that it was originally designed using "best practices," which means it was probably extremely overly-complex, etc.
  37. ChronosBut that's just a guess. Modern technical people _do_ seem to love their _ridiculously_ overly complex solutions these days.
  38. dreamrealnevet would *die* on sqlite and badly
  39. Chronosdreamreal: What does nevet use? And why would it die on sqlite?
  40. dreamrealpostgres, and it's an orchestration engine
  41. dreamrealso lots of threaded access
  42. dreamreal(plus it uses postgres for some specific features: sqlite is slowly getting some of them but not others)
  43. dreamrealI could replace db search, I think, but the multithreaded db access is still a deathknell
  44. ChronosI think, though I'm not sure, lobste.rs is read-mostly and write-rarely.
  45. ChronosWhere "write-rarely" is quite subjective, of course, heh. But I feel like I remember them saying something like that it does 3 writes per second on average?
  46. ChronosDon't trust my memory. I'm old. ;)
  47. dreamrealI mean, that's a good situation for sqlite, sure
  48. dreamrealbut it's still gross, and seeing a massive jump in provisioning capability by GOING TO SQLITE says horrible things about your ability to database
  49. ChronosI believe it :)
  50. dreamrealeven with ruby you shoudln't see that kind of delta
  51. ChronosBuilding any substantial project on Ruby makes me question the technical people behind it, heh
  52. dreamrealHey, ruby is great for projects that look like they are ruby-shaped. It's just that not as many projects are ruby-shaped as people want to think.
  53. ParaI miss the *-on-Rails era.
  54. ParaNow we're just mostly off the rails.
  55. whaleythis is the second time I've seen sqllite referenced for something that's bearing some non-trivial load. It's like the dead rising from the grave. Human Sacrifice! Dogs and Cats living together! Mass Hysteria!
  56. whaleynext you are going to tell me it's ok to use Redis directly as a persistent data store
  57. dreamrealI can't see myself doing that at all.
  58. Para"I made this really neat programmable cache called Redis!" "Cool, I'm going to cluster it and store unicode data into it as well."
  59. julemand101Para: Time to make a FUSE driver on Linux so we can mount our new Redis storage and run our servers from it
  60. Parajulemand101: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cTPBGZcTRqo
  61. nevetYouTube: I Wrote A Filesystem to Beat Factorio. | DocJade
  62. dreamreal... can we run DOOM in redis
  63. julemand101Para: Can also recommend: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JcJSW7Rprio
  64. nevetYouTube: Harder Drive: Hard drives we didn't want or need | suckerpinch
  65. Para(spoiler: DocJade learned Rust and made a custom FUSE filesystem to run Factorio from diskettes)
  66. ParaWhat even are the the DOOM primitives.
  67. * Chronos throws any article with the word "Rust" in it in the bit bucket.
  68. ParaOh but it's Factorio so it's way way way better.
  69. ParaThe factory must grow.
  70. Tenchiare we talking about Rust the video game or Rust the programming language ?
  71. ParaThe better Rust. Which is the programming language.
  72. whaleythe lifetime of this conversation needs to go out of scope
  73. dreamrealThat's unsafe.
  74. sbalmosdon't go into a panic. it's just a trait of his personality
