- dreamrealand if you think this content is worth anything, please consider sharing it - without grassroots propagation this remains a passion project of mine, and that's fine, but it's essentially limiting. If the information's worth it, it shouldn't be limited by ME and my social networks.
- deebothere's something weird about the layout that makes it hard to read (for me), but i can't quite put my finger on it, maybe it's the font and especially the titles that have weird kerning on my linux/firefox: https://imgur.com/a/EvS7Huy , in reader mode it looks way better (again, to me)
- deeboalso dark vs actual black background might be part of it
- dreamreal*nod* noted. Unfortunately, different users prefer different things; one thing I'd thought of but haven't ever committed time to was having a logged-in user have their own style available (so you could literally select a background, font, etc) but it'd be too easy to absolutely break everything.
- dreamrealThe *capability* is there, users have freeform metadata available, but... not worth the squeeze in general
- deeboquake1 palette in movies, claude palette on websites is the reality of 2026
- dreamreal*nod* I didn't actually design the colors for BCN, if you wanted MY color scheme you'd wonder what was wrong with me
- dreamrealOTOH, my color scheme WOULD increase the number of users using reader mode...
- * dreamreal guesses deebo's not going to share BCN any time soon :D
- dreamreal(I'm laughing about that: it's fine! I'm not interested in placing a demand on users.)
- deeboi don't in general share anything like that unless it's extremely relevant to something going on, or funny :)
- dreamrealOf course. I share pretty aggressively myself; it's how I can best indicate that someone's effort is worth recognizing and isn't wasted.
- Chronosdeebo: What kerning issues are you seeing? It looks okay to me.
- ChronosI hate it that, at work, it takes several _minutes_ for our JVMs to shutdown, bleh. Not Java's fault, but bleh, I often miss the old days when people cared _a little bit_ about performance.
- dreamrealChronos: I actually filed an issue to track it - the headline actually uses some negative kerning for that font, and I wanted to consider changing it. It may also be that the fonts loaded AFTER the page rendered, since it uses downloadable fonts.
- ChronosInteresting. I can often see kerning issues, but maybe this one is a little too subtle for me.
- dreamrealI fix UI issues ALL the time on BCN - new features, too (like I added comments that are anchored to text in the posts, today, and robots.txt as well). But I'm blindly finding my way through UI/UX issues, because it's not my arena.
- dreamrealThe kerning issue in the header would never have occurred to me, but that doesn't mean it's not relevant
- dreamrealI actually wouldn't mind a way to let users choose their own styles, but... I mean... making it so they couldn't absolutely wreck how the site appears to them is a lot of lifting and it's just not worth it
- dreamrealI tried to make it extraordinarily reader-friendly for exactly that purpose anyway
