  41. dreamrealoi jreicher! Lots of changes in nevet :D
  42. jreicherI'm jealous you've had time to work on your own stuff. It's been all Purim for me. ;)
  43. dreamrealWell, Haman's been being taken care of by Trump, so...
  44. dreamrealI dressed up as a 'merican
  45. dreamrealhttps://x.com/DavidMKeyes/status/2028545036015595577
  46. jreicherThe timing is incredible, right? We've all been talking about it. Not that I'm celebrating all this death, but it's still remarkable.
  47. bluejreicher: in .il-tv they call him Hamanei...
  48. blueI get along awful with israelis, but gotta appreciate their humour
  49. dreamrealyeah, these people have families that love them, too. Yet it's a butcher's bill that's been overdue.
  50. bluedreamreal: this is an open check since at least '79
  51. dreamrealAt least.
  52. blueWho said Trump can't pay bills?
  53. blue:P
  54. blueThe isolationists are what's kiling me.
  55. blueLike, WWII taught you nothing? 9/11? 7/10?
  56. blueYou think you're gonna snuggle up within your shores and evil won't come after you?
  57. blueThat's NOT how evil works.
  58. blueIf it worked that way... it wouldn't be evil, would it.
  59. blueIt's part of the DEFINITION that if you don't preempt it, it will come after you.
  60. jreicherI must admit I am looking forward a bit to the friction between Trump and the isolationist MAGA base who probably feel he's betrayed them.
  61. jreicherAnd I say that without taking sides.
  62. jreicherI just thing Trump's only true values is that he has none.
  63. dreamrealhe wrote a book, you know
  64. dreamrealpublished it in the 80s if memory serves for the timing
  65. dreamrealit's a very mid book written by a relatively decent writer ghostwriting for a very mid brain
  66. blueAnd that's true, he has no values: which is really the best kind of politician. Imagine you HAVE values, like Mamdani. Your values are you're gonna pay people to do work regardless if they're qualified or doing it well. You can end up with thousands snow-shovellers doing absolutely nothing.
  67. blueIf imagine you HAVE values, like Merkel: you wanna be compassionate and help everyone, so you invite millions of illegals into your country, creating a generational problem!
  68. jreicherblue: I used to think that too. These days I'm not so sure, because the electorate can't micromanage their representatives. But I don't really know how it should work.
  69. blueThe best way to map politics is that all politicians sucks, all power corrupts, so probably the best people are: those who already have everything (like Trump), and those who have no real values (again, like Trump).
  70. dreamrealTrump's hilarious: he's a very stable genius, you know. And a dimwit. And he has a playbook - it's IN HIS BOOK, that idiotic "art of the deal" thing, and it's gross, I've read it and you come away thinking "OMG what a BOOB."
  71. blueAnd with best, I really mean least worst. There is no best. Politics is as bad as prostitution
  72. dreamrealBut he follows it... and has outfoxed a TON of brilliant people as a result. Just by being consistent.
  73. blueHe also does and says things politicians aren't 'supposed' to do (why, really?). I think that's part of the charm
  74. dreamrealHe isn't consistent in ways that we'd value - like, I have rules I follow in how I behave. I don't fuck around on my wife, even if I could, for example. trump doesn't have those moral guardrails... but he has rules about how he conducts his dealings and people KEEP FALLING FOR THEM.
  75. blueLike, calling Dems crazy in the SOTU... that HIT the spot. There was no better word.
  76. dreamrealyeah, and he TOLD them he was going to do it, and he did, and THEY SCREWED IT UP.
  77. dreamrealAll they had to do was stand for the victims, honor the hockey team, etc
  78. dreamrealstupid playacting bullshit
  79. dreamrealbut he still got them on it
  80. blueLike imagine some old-guard Republican... "that's beneath me". Uh, no? They're literally crazy. They prefer illegals to citizens. That's crazy.
  81. blueThey swore an oath to the country... prefer illegals to citizens would get them imprisoned in any normal country for betrayal
  82. bluepreferring*
  83. jreicherI don't doubt that Trump can succeed at a gamified version of politics, but I think this isn't success in politics. It's a self-fulfilling redefinition of success. Politics needs to be something else.
  84. bluejreicher: even in a bottom-line mapping, he got the hostages. Those people are alive because of him, right now.
  85. blueDo you think they'd be alive if you got Kamala?
  86. blueI don't think so.
  87. blueNext act... he's strengthening the central govt in Lebanon, which *seems* to be bearing fruit right now, with wide condemnation for Hizbullah for its reckless actions
  88. blueI don't know about America per-se: but for the world, he's been a force of good
  89. jreicherI think it's too early to tell. I'm not saying you're wrong, but there are many examples in history of efforts that appear effective in the short term possibly making things a lot worse in the long term. Some of what you're saying has improved are themselves these consequences. Iran wouldn't have been what it is without the Iranian revolution. That might not have happened if the previous regime hadn't been so awful. Etc.
  90. blueWell, yeah. Wisdom in hindsight is always easier... I'm sure Obama meant *well* with his Cairo speech, but he utterly destroyed the Middle East with his Arab spring ideas
  91. blueUnfortunately there are no functioning Arab states that don't work as dictatorships. It's basically either that or civil war
  92. blueLebanon is *trying*, but it's been through decades of civil war
  93. blueSyria has been destroyed by civil war... to make a full circle into dictatorship, essentially
  94. blue(admittedly a much worse one...)
  95. jreicherNot just Arab states. I still think it's pretty awful what happened in Afghanistan. I feel like they were betrayed, almost.
  96. blueYeah. The problem is that Afghanistan, like most post-colonial countries, is not a real country. it's split between pashtuns and a few other groups. And there are just as many pashtuns in pakistan. The border was drawn by their british, who in their endless wisdom managed to mess up just about every colony
  97. dreamrealAF was betrayed.
  98. blueand now they're a war a-swelling between pakistan and afghanistan, exactly because of that
  99. bluepakistan itself, is also not a real country. it has pashtuns, balochs, punjabis (muslim hindus), and a few others
  100. bluepunjabis are the ruling class + military, and they're dreadfully afraid not just of india, but of internal fragmentation
  101. bluein fact the entire indian subcontinent + middle east is endless dumpster fire of historic errors
  102. bluetake the kurds... the largest stateless minority in the world
  103. blueabout 20 million people divided amongst turkey, iraq, iran, syria
  104. bluethey were betrayed too.. they were promised a country in iraq, got thrown to the dogs
  105. bluenow in syria, too
  106. bluewho fought ISIS though in syria and iraq? the kurds
  107. jreicherProbably nothing infuriates me more about the pro-palestinian protesters here than that they seem to ignore the kurds.
  108. blueLOTR quote here: "by the blood of our people". I ALWAYS think of the kurds there
  109. bluethey have *earned* their keep, more than anyone
  110. blueand yet nobody cares, totally demotivating
  111. bluejreicher: https://x.com/itsme_urstruly/status/2028515388556972054
  112. bluedreamreal shared it earlier and it's so great!
  113. jreicherIt sounds nothing like Eddie Murphy. Who knew.
  114. dreamrealbe jreicher
  115. nevet* channeling jreicher: is the contributor's view. you would want to save maintainers resolving conflicts with code they are seeking comfort.
  116. jreicherWhat is this?
