  20. bot[ByteCode.News] Bruce: A Wrapper Around Java Cryptography - https://bytecode.news/posts/2026/03/bruce-a-wrapper-around-java-cryptography
  21. ChronosI tried to submit something to bytecode.news, but I'm not sure if I did it right.
  22. dreamrealthe magic link thing?
  23. ChronosYes.
  24. ChronosAnd it looks to me like you chose wisely to not use magic links!
  25. ChronosThey appear to have a lot of pitfalls.
  26. dreamrealYou're on google docs, yeah?
  27. ChronosYes
  28. ChronosI kind of ended up in the Google ecosystem, except for my phone, which is an iPhone.
  29. dreamrealokay, I'm going to show you my edits, aight?
  30. dreamrealsent
  31. Chronosdreamreal: Looks perfect!
  32. ChronosI've run into a magic links issue myself, which is tapping on a magic link in email on an iPhone opens up an embedded browser thing, which is not at all the desired behavior.
  33. dreamrealthe summary: `Evan Todd wrote "Magic Link Pitfalls," an article going over some of the errors he's seen in sites that mail a passthrough link to log in to users. The idea is simple: to "log in" you say "send me a link," a link gets generated and sent, the user clicks a link, and they're logged in. But there're problems with this approach: they can be avoided, but not without taking care.`
  34. ChronosAnd tap-and-hold and copy and paste into a web browser -> no good. Annoying to me. Close to impossible for non-techies.
  35. dreamrealyep
  36. ChronosI think you landed on just about the best solutin.
  37. Chronoss/solutin/solution/
  38. dreamrealAnd I DO have OIDC, I just haven't tested it, I need to
  39. dreamrealso summary looks good?
  40. ChronosThat's that "Login with XXX" (where "XXX" can be Google or something else), right?
  41. dreamreal(I want to MAKE SURE your experience as a contributor is awesome, to hammer out kinks)
  42. Chronosdreamreal: Yes. I like it. Thanks!
  43. ChronosI should have used Gemini to produce a good summary and such. What you came up with is great
  44. dreamrealdamn it's still under anonymous though
  45. dreamrealWell, I'm an editor, this is my job
  46. dreamrealthis is basically what I did on TSS, every day
  47. ChronosAnonymous? Oh, that's fine. It just seems like an interesting article to boost bytecode.news. :)
  48. dreamrealAbsolutely! Did you log in today?
  49. ChronosTSS?
  50. ChronosYes.
  51. ChronosErr, no.
  52. dreamrealAh, that's what it is
  53. ChronosI'm still within my 30 days from last authentication.
  54. dreamrealthere's a bug in the JWT preservation: if I redeploy it gets mangled
  55. ChronosJust verified, yes, still authenticated
  56. dreamrealgiven that I redeploy every day...
  57. Chronosoh oops
  58. dreamrealit SAYS you're authed, and you sort of are
  59. dreamrealthe client side thinks you are
  60. dreamrealthe provenance does not
  61. dreamrealLike I said, it's an issue I've recorded :D
  62. dreamrealuser fixed
  63. ChronosThanks!
  64. dreamreali DO need to fix that JWT thing
  65. dreamrealChronos: ++
  66. nevetChronos now has karma of 6.
  67. dreamrealAnyway, at TSS (theserverside.com) the editor used to look for interesting content, but users could and did submit content too - and the editor would make sure it was suitable for publication and hammer out any problems.
  68. dreamrealThat's what I'm doing here, too. I used to read 1400 things a day looking for stuff worth publishing.
  69. dreamrealthe value-add is that I actually USE this stuff a lot, so I actually know the impact: I ruffled some feathers by being honest about how much fluff was involved sometimes
  70. dreamrealthat's why the bruce article ticked me off
  71. dreamreal(if you read that one and you can tell I was pissed off, I did a poor job.)
  72. Chronosdreamreal: Oof. That sounds like _a lot_ of work!
  73. dreamrealWell, it was my day job, and I was pretty good at it
  74. dreamrealA lot of bytecode.news is stuff that I'd wished I'd had back then
  75. dreamreal"hey, how do I make this EASIER"
  76. dreamrealordinarily I'd just rewrite that magic link thing but I figured you deserved to see what I was doing
  77. dreamrealYou should be able to write an article in irc, too, if that's easier
  78. dreamrealalthough I'd need to create a service binding for you to attach it to your web user
