  24. Chronosdreamreal: Hi! I'm here
  25. ChronosWell, in and out, depends on the day/hour/etc. :)
  26. Chronosdreamreal: 5786 is the current Hebrew year?
  27. dreamrealyeah
  28. dreamrealChronos: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=47801662
  29. nevetDang, that hurt to read. I'm starting up a new news-ish site like the old TheSer... | Hacker News
  30. ChronosComment upvoted
  31. Chronos(I'm "Teckla" on HN)
  32. dreamrealwasn't farming for votes, but ... what do you think of the thread?
  33. Chronosdreamreal: It's hard for me to articulate how I feel about Hackers News commenters and threads. There's a lot of people (and bots?) and comments that are very, _very_ good at sounding intelligent and insightful... and they're _just plain wrong_.
  34. dreamrealYeah. I thought the engagement in that thread wasn't bad, but I don't exactly live on HN.
  35. ChronosYeah, pretty good engagement
  36. ChronosI mostly lurk on HN, but I've posted comments here and there
  37. dreamrealI have no idea how *I* came across - the "oh man, there you go leveraging this site for advertisement" caught me off guard
  38. ChronosYou mentioned your website, for which many people will simply not forgive you, full stop
  39. ChronosAnd I'm not sure they're worth engaging
  40. dreamrealand the guy saying "this isn't a news site" bugged me: it's almost like that's what I said, doofus :D
  41. ChronosYour site perhaps most reminds me of Lobsters, which has experienced very slow, but very consistent growth
  42. Chronosdreamreal: Heh! Indeed. :)
  43. Chronosdreamreal: If I may?... can I throw a few dumb ideas your way?
  44. Chronos(They are more instincts than ideas, perhaps more rooted in nostalgia than sense)
  45. dreamrealLike I'd ever say no
  46. ChronosI should have asked for money!
  47. Chronosdreamreal: Dumb idea #1: It *might* be fun to have an associated IRC channel (presumably #bytecode.news ?) โ€” probably here on Libera.Chat โ€” to assist in building a core community
  48. ChronosOf course, the website would need to mention the IRC network and channel name
  49. ChronosOne potential downside, though, is it might attract bots. (Do bots care about IRC these days?)
  50. dreamreal#streampack, and #nevet.
  51. dreamrealThe site would need to mention it, not sure how the site should market itself. But you're not wrong.
  52. dreamrealso I don't think that's a dumb idea at all, you're dumb for thinking it's dumb
  53. Chronosdreamreal: Dumb idea #2: An ssh UI โ€” geeks gonna geek, and frankly, you're running a website for geeks (kinda, sorta). This would likely be a lot of work, and might not be worth it.
  54. dreamrealwhat would it do? Would it be like late.sh?
  55. Chronosdreamreal: Is it okay if I join #streampack?
  56. dreamreal(jason lee has put that same idea out there)
  57. dreamrealof course it is
  58. Chronosdreamreal: I wasn't sure if #never was considered public(-ish) or private, so perhaps just a mention on the website.
  59. dreamrealwell, nevet is the "official name" of the bytecode irc bot, so...
  60. dreamrealthe banner.txt in the application module is "nevet" in hebrew :D
  61. ChronosI've never used (or even heard of) late.sh, but the idea would be a BBS style experience. You kind of have authentication covered already โ€” their ssh public key is their identity (for 30 days), after confirmation via email, of course.
  62. dreamrealthat's a lot of what late.sh is
  63. ChronosYeah, I guessed that "nevet" was somehow Hebrew in origin. Or maybe you outright told me. I forget now.
  64. dreamrealssh late.sh - all rust, all TUI, it's actually neat but I don't think it's very usable
  65. dreamrealnevet = sprout in hebrew
