  1. bot<discord:josephbottinger> testing
  2. dreamrealtesting
  3. bot<discord:josephbottinger> Okay, here's a really long bit of text on discord. Discord and slack and other things have really long buffers, compared to IRC; this is suboptimal for IRC because IRC channels can have flood protection, and we don't necessarily want to trigger the servers clamping down on a connection just because some goober writes a lot of text, you know? And that's made worse when you could have a bot as a member of a LOT of discord channels - and imagine if someone uses a set of mirrors, all connected to a set of VERY verbose wankers, all writing TONS of text like mad. We're already kinda pushing throughput on a given IRC client, and we may need to throttle at some point ANYWAY, but allowing GIANT LONG HONKING LINES to be mirrored from slack AND discord just seems like we're ASKING for flood limitations.

  10. bot<discord:josephbottinger> okay, still broken
  11. phalethgraphs on left are a bit misaligned https://images4.imagebam.com/40/86/73/ME1ANBMI_o.png
  12. bot<discord:blue> true
  13. bot<discord:phaleth> just a small test ```c #include <stdio.h> int main(void) { printf("hello, world\n"); return 0; } ```
  14. * phaleth yawns
  15. bot<discord:josephbottinger> test discord
  16. dreamrealtest from irc
  17. dreamrealokay, so we found some message types that fail, apparently.
  18. * dreamreal blinks
  19. blueya
  20. bot<discord:josephbottinger> jreicher: this is me typing in discord. I'm apparenly finding some mesages that didn't get translated; that's fine, I don't really "know" discord, so I'm a-learning.
  21. bot<discord:josephbottinger> But ... as you can see, discord content is being echoed across to IRC. Quick, ask a question in IRC!
  22. jreicherThat's the kind of thing I was wondering about, as I don't know these protocols/platforms/schemas either.
  23. jreicherWhere would you like me to ask a question?
  24. bot<discord:josephbottinger> In IRC, as you're not on the guild that's being mirrored
  25. bot<discord:josephbottinger> like right here, just ask
  26. bot<discord:josephbottinger> doesn't matter what it is, I'm going to answer from discord ๐Ÿ™‚
  27. bot<discord:josephbottinger> ooo, emojis are coming across as unicode. Discoveries all around!
  28. jreicherWhat's your favourite BeeGees song?
  29. bot<discord:josephbottinger> It's OBVIOUSLY "more than a woman."
  30. dreamrealSee? two-way communication! Definitely some holes, I'm filing issues now, though.
  31. bot<discord:blue> this is like watching a kid getting his xmas gift
  32. dreamreal:D
  33. jreicherAre there any advantages to discord over IRC? (Serious question; I'm a bit overwhelmed by all the chat platforms around these days)
  34. dreamrealWell, you asked for it, you got it, and as I'm definitely a lot more aware of IRC than discord, there're holes. I also don't send IRC actions anywhere, and i need to trap those better.
  35. bluejreicher: it's easier to share code, send pictures, audio snippets, and there are audio/video calls. it's a modern chat platform, while irc is very... traditional
  36. bluethe nevet bridge allows this project to be present on both platforms, and at least allow some intermessaging
  37. dreamrealdiscord is alo INCREDIBLY noisy compared to irc
  38. dreamrealIt's definitely more modern: IRC is fire-and-forget, discord allows message deletes and edits, file attachments apart from DCC (which never really worked anyway...)
  39. jreicherIRC is already too noisy for me. I'm really hurting from the time I spend on it picking the wheat from the chaff, and I'm not sure I want more of that. (The wheat is often REALLY good though.)
  40. bot<discord:josephbottinger> Oh, I mean different kinds of noise: not only *busier* but, like, actually noisy since the discord app begs to send you system notifications all the time
  41. bot<discord:josephbottinger> It's surprising how often I've forgotten to FULLY deafen the dadgum app
  42. bluein terms of terribleness, from most terrible the most acceptable, it's definitely slack < discord < irc
  43. bot<discord:josephbottinger> oh, you sweet summer child
  44. bluebut irc can be really primitive. ircv3 is trying to fix that, but it's very slow
  45. bot<discord:josephbottinger> never experienced the joys of mattermost or zulip, I see
  46. bluenope, and don't intend to
  47. bot<discord:josephbottinger> $work uses mattermost
  48. bot<discord:josephbottinger> the MAIN advantage is that it's a really crappy slack BUT it's fully hosted on-prem
  49. bluemattermost sounds like something I'd like to avoid on principle of a dumb name
  50. bot<discord:josephbottinger> it's better than some names. "anus with elephantiasis" is a worse name, for example, but almost as descriptive.
  51. jreicherblue: are you saying irc is the most terrible or the most acceptable?
  52. bot<discord:josephbottinger> see, jreicher, I'm as funnyon discord as I am everywhere! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA!
  53. bluejreicher: most acceptable
  54. bot<discord:josephbottinger> Hibernate uses zulip, and I'd use mattermost a year before zulip
  55. blueslack is definitely terrible
  56. bluetwo things that spring to mind: the ability to send both to a thread and a channel (why?), and the fact hitting the up arrow doesn't edit your last message
  57. bot<discord:josephbottinger> see, we're having a conversation across protocols and servers, this is kinda neat. It's also what matrix does, which is why I call this a terrible matrix clone. ๐Ÿ˜„
  58. bluedidn't libera turn off its matrix bridge because it didn't work?
  59. bot<discord:josephbottinger> I have no idea. I knew some people who ran their own and mein Gott was it annoying
  60. bot<discord:josephbottinger> that's part of why I thought nevet would be a good source for it - and why I made sure it doesn't multiplex channels
  61. blueya
  62. bot<discord:josephbottinger> damn it, twitter MIGHT require an API to get the content
  63. bot<discord:josephbottinger> they keep changing the way they present content, and that makes retrieval via url really hard
  64. jreicherWhat's the Truth Social api like? ;)
  65. dreamrealWho gives a shit
  66. dreamrealhttps://x.com/dev_maims/status/2022588131623501927
  67. dreamrealokay, skillbot doesn't do twitter either. Such joy.
  68. bluedreamreal: add it to nevet, then we can remove skillbot. we don't need a thousand bots
  69. dreamrealI'm not doing fediverse OR truth social integration: both platforms are so politically amplified that they're unuseful. Well, I assume truth social is that way.
  70. bluethe owner isn't even in the channel, so technically I should remove the bots anyway
  71. dreamrealblue: add which "it" to nevet?
  72. bluedreamreal: showing xeets
  73. blueooh, truth social api, lol
  74. dreamrealblue: I'm working on it. I may have to actually use their API. Wait, isn't there a twitter public feed mirror somewhere?
  75. bluethere is xcancel.com. though I'm not sure it has an API
  76. blueisn't the x api free though, dreamreal?
  77. bot<discord:josephbottinger> it's an API, though
  78. blueis that a problem? APIs are superior to scraping
  79. bot<discord:josephbottinger> they have a very limited twitter API, yes, traffic-limited, but I'd like to avoid API cutouts where possible
  80. blueright
  81. bot<discord:josephbottinger> I don't need to scrape, I found out what to do, because I ARE A GENUYS
  82. bluelol
  83. phalethin here twitter links are being posted very rarely, no clue about discord
  84. dreamrealthis isn't the only channel nevet watches, though
  85. phalethif discord allowed custom clients then it'd not be so terrible, on the irc side there are a lot of clients to choose from, as long as there is no discord client for a terminal, for the textual communication at least, then discord will always be a terrible UX
  86. phalethdreamreal: ok
  87. dreamrealphaleth: nevet is a generalized information stream. It's intended very much to be an octopus: the goal is eventually for it to notice "interesting content" and create pointers to it for admins, like "hey, that dope dreamreal pointed out THIS url, that seems newsworthy!" no matter where that dope dreamreal posted it
  88. phalethI can relate to that, I used to post links regularly in some of IRC channels, some people seriously thought I'm a bot
  89. dreamrealor maybe that dope dreamreal just says something like "hey, nevet, notice that thing someone just said" - it doesn't have to be automatic if automatic detection is expensive, especially for low-context mediums like IRC or discord, where "events" tend to be single lines of text
  90. phalethcalling yoursel a bot is a bit weird, kinda like calling yourself dope
  91. phalethyourself*
  92. dreamrealphaleth: I'm not calling myself a bot. Yet I obey proverbs 27:2 pretty firmly. :D
  93. dreamreal"Do not praise yourself; let praise come from the mouths of strangers."
  94. phalethwell, I kinda did
  95. phalethby that definition a bot can be very strange for sure
  96. dreamrealBesides, I'm fine with people going "man, that dreamreal is a moron" - lets me surprise 'em when I'm not!
  97. dreamrealdamn it, it looks like I'm going to HAVE To go to twitter's API. nitter.net exists, but I can't figure out how to use it as a bot; something in the negotiation is failing and it ends up returning no content.
  98. bot<discord:blue> Indeedo
  99. bot<discord:blue> We're all bots, aren't we
  100. phalethhmm, prolly won't happen on IRC to you these days unless you are in some kind of webshit or other hype kind of a channel, if there is still any such channel left
  101. dreamrealWhat won't happen on IRC these days?
  102. bot<discord:blue> True
  103. dreamrealYou guys use inspecific nouns ALL THE TIME, it drives me nuts
  104. phalethpeople calling you names
  105. dreamrealoh, eh, I dunno. People are people everywhere... and nevet isn't an IRC bot
  106. bot<discord:blue> Who is "you guys"?
  107. dreamrealblue: you and phaleth both have used indeterminate articles this morning :D
  108. bot<discord:blue> This is great btw
  109. dreamrealmorning MY time BTW
  110. bot<discord:blue> I'm on my phone and can read all the nonsense coming from irc
  111. bot<discord:blue> !today
  112. botToday is Saturday, February 14, 2026
  113. bot<discord:blue> It's Saturday, why are you even working
  114. dreamrealtoday hebrew
  115. nevetToday is Saturday, 27 Shevat, 5786 (Hebrew)
  116. dreamrealbecause there's stuff to do, of course
  117. bot<discord:blue> So in the last libera update, there was some nonsense about ircv3 supporting message tags
  118. dreamrealI really should translate discord's "someone is typing" into messages on IRC, that would be SO awesome!
  119. bot<discord:blue> This could be interesting in the context of this brigde
  120. bot<discord:blue> True, but it could get noisy really fast
  121. phaleththose ... is typing messages are most annoying
  122. bot<discord:blue> It's technically some sort of meta info
  123. dreamrealHmm, message tags is an idea a friend of mine and I were talking about back in 2000 or so, to provide threading in IRC.. but it'd have had to be manual, so nope. I wonder how well it'd be supported by simple clients like weechat.
  124. bot<discord:blue> Probably not at all
  125. bot<discord:blue> But it's in itcv3
  126. dreamrealokay, looks like twitter can go screw itself: there's a per-read cost
  127. dreamrealwith an investment up front. Mein Gott.
  128. dreamrealGood for Musk, bad for me. C'est la vie.
  129. bot<discord:blue> Just use xcancel.com
  130. bot<discord:blue> You're making this way harder than it needs be
  131. dreamrealxcancel uses a captcha
  132. bot<discord:blue> Since when
  133. dreamrealI just hit it
  134. dreamrealhttps://xcancel.com/dev_maims/status/2022588131623501927 first hit gave me a "verification" page looking for mouse transitions
  135. dreamrealor something
  136. dreamrealAs soon as I moved my mouse so I could read it, it verified and went through
  137. dreamrealyeah, okay. xcancel is a no-go too; it does a LOT of bot verification stuff.
  138. dreamrealokay, twitter urls are doneso for now. If anyone wants to pay for it, I'll develop it - it's not, like, DIFFICULT - but this is a vanity project for now. I'm already paying too much for it.
  139. dreamrealI understand why Twitter charges per read now, but daaaaaang
  140. phalethI thought tech people were already using bluesky or whatever one of those twitter clones is called
  141. dreamrealI refuse to use bluesky. It's not a security hole - it's a security supernova.
  142. dreamrealbluesky has a LITERAL firehose that's open for reads.
  143. dreamreal"publish to your private group" is supported by CLIENTS. Not the firehose.
  144. dreamrealExplain how you REALLY REALLY REALLY like gerbils inserted into your body through various orifices... and yes, everyone can see that if you're watching the firehose.
  145. dreamrealThere are no secrets. Literally.
  146. dreamrealActually, my job might explicitly require I not post on bluesky...
  147. bot<discord:blue> Bluesky is a wokefest
  148. dreamrealit's worse than the fediverse, if that can be imagined. From a *technical* perspective, not the social one. But socially it's pretty awful, too.
  149. dreamrealI don't care about "woke" per se but woke tends to be stupid and blind
  150. phalethsounds like old twitter to me
  151. dreamreal"I told my secrets on bluesky" is ... a complete lie, bluesky has no secrets and no way to keep anything secret at all
  152. bot<discord:blue> ^
  153. dreamrealand yes, I know, my contempt for bluesky might be showing
  154. bot<discord:blue> Ya
  155. dreamrealAnd no, I don't want nevet to be part of the fediverse either. It's a great way to hammer your VPS throughput limits.
  156. bot<discord:blue> fedicircus is just as awful as bluesky
  157. bluedreamreal: funny effect. because my nicks are same on both platforms, when I talk, I get pinged on irc. lol
  158. dreamreal:D That's what you get for having /notify on :D
  159. dreamrealhttps://github.com/jottinger/bytecode.news/issues/31 https://github.com/jottinger/bytecode.news/issues/30
  160. dreamreal(for those who can see the repo)
  161. dreamrealFor everyone else: fediverse ("won't do, but maybe?") and bluesky ("go kick rocks, bluesky, NO.")
  162. bot<discord:josephbottinger> _tests_
  163. bot<discord:josephbottinger> _blinks_
  164. jottinger* dreamreal wibbles
  165. jottingerhey, actions propagate now!
  166. blueyou should *probably* translate them to ** in irc
  167. blueI think irc clients also support _this_
  168. bluebut *this* is more commonly supported
  169. bluein fact, discord translated my previous 'this' to italic
  170. blueso the translation back would be to *
  171. bot<discord:blue> *test*
  172. blueyup
  173. jottingerthe problem is that discord doesn't actually do actions
  174. jottingerso it's faked
  175. bot<discord:blue> Fake it till you make it
