  7. phalethhi blue
  8. bluelinus is a moron, but the laptop looks good
  9. phalethyeah, that laptop looks decent
  10. blueya
  11. bluefor superarch, I'm planning two editors, superarch blue (niri compositor) for devs, and superarch green, traditional desktop paradigm with cinnamon. cinnamon will only go stable on wayland in xmas 26, so we have a bit of time
  12. blues/editors/editions/
  13. bluealso I need to finish orz, so I can test a superarch bsd base finally
  14. bluegoal is to reach parity with linux, so you get a freebsd kernel and libc, but uptodate software
  15. phalethcinnamon is a good desktop, I've switched from MATE recently on all computers
  16. phalethnot sure why you want to finish orz, I've found some containers for freebsd that might be usable, I should try installing postgres by myself there
  17. phalethwhat bothers me is ports, it's such a huge download, but maybe I can only take one subfolder from there, not sure
  18. phalethfeels weird to have to download such all ports everytime before needing just a single one
  19. blueso basically, hear me out here. orz is a go program that I could compile for almost every platform, so linux/freebsd/netbsd. and it should be installable on any platform as well, so it should download versions of the software you install, for any of those platforms. some we'll have to compile ourselves because they don't exist. and everything is installed to .local, so that's gradual movement. you don't
  20. blueneed to install superarch first, you can start being productive with orz, then we slowly layer the OS parts that orz can't install into .local, around it
  21. blueports is terrible because it's outdated and usually only updated with a release
  22. bluebut really I want a bsd base + an archlinux experience, that's what I'm going for with superarch. of course if you prefer you can get a linux base alternatively
  23. bluethe only things you'll need to set during installation and can't easiy change later are kernel+libc, fs, and bootloader
  24. blueso you wouldn't be able to change an existing linux installation to bsd, but otherwise you'll have feature parity
  25. phalethnowadays they tell to download ports like this: sudo git clone --depth=1 https://git.FreeBSD.org/ports.git /usr/ports
  26. nevetMaking sure you're not a bot!
  27. phalethso that means it's up to date
  28. blueya
  29. phaleththe only thing I don't like about linux is systemd
  30. blueya, we'll have dinit with the freebsd kernel
  31. bluefirst we need a situation where you can get orz and then use it to install stuff
  32. blueso the first milestone is getting rid of mise
  33. bluebtw this also means we'll soon have to superarch.org on RP
  34. blueincluding packages API under superarch.org/packages
  35. phalethwill superarch have some sort of base OCI images?
  36. phalethI don't see a point installing an OS on a VM, expecially with Contabo who want's you to pay them extra if you want custom OS
  37. blueyeah we'll add a base OCI image, I think
  38. bluespecifically superarch blue and superarch green will be desktops preconfigs, but we'll also have superarch base or whatever for vanilla stuff
  39. bluelongterm goal obviously own laptops, but for now this needs to be run flawlessy on my T480 and later perhaps X1 and then framework
  40. bluelocally right now on my T480, I have the setup as I would do it in the blue variant essentially
  41. phalethok, so you're not using archlinux installer or endeavouros?
  42. blueno, going for selfbase
  43. phalethand the init system you have is dinit?
  44. blueyes I think so
  45. phalethvery nice
  46. phalethI was looking into some guides to replace systemd with dinit and it seemed too nerdy
  47. blueya
  48. phaleththere's a github mirror https://github.com/freebsd/freebsd-ports
  49. phaleththat means I can download all that as tar.gz
  50. blueheh
  51. bluethat's such an inefficient way to do package upgrade
  52. blues
  53. bluejust download the whole zig
  54. phalethyeah, it's strange
